Caroline Ruizeveld

Caroline Ruizeveld, the stonemason.

Ruizeveld graduated from the Utrecht School of the Arts in two independent disciplines: painting and sculpture. She spent ten years immersed in a combination of these two disciplines. The paintings were hung from the wall in self-built cabinets, and the sculptures became increasingly fragile, as thin as linen.

In two dimensions, physical exertion became a problem, while with various three-dimensional materials, resistance became a problem. Rocks increasingly came into focus.

When sculptors in Amsterdam wanted to test her love for stone by having her spend a few days solely chiseling granite (carving ridges with a pointed chisel along the entire length of a stone), it became clear to Ruizeveld that this was exactly what she was looking for!

It was a latent wish that came to life after a long residency in Zimbabwe, Italy and Indonesia with Serpents, Spring Stones, Marbles, Basalt and Pumice.

Since then, no brush has been touched; the various shades of stone overshadowed the various pigments. In fact, they are often locked into the rock.

The transparency of an Alabaster versus the density of a Diabase, the world of stone is endlessly varied and challenging.

The idea that stones are millions, billions of years old commands respect. You don't treat that lightly. In fact, you don't want any "leftovers"; you want to reuse them until they're no longer viable.

It survives the present time long enough and the test of time may be seen.

Just like Ruizeveld's work!

autonomous circular and competence

Ruizeveld follows her own values and goals, is independent and self-reliant. Therefore, she has the freedom to do her work in her own way. Reusing raw materials is a key element of her work. Ruizeveld has over 25 years of experience in stonework, both domestically and internationally, and she passionately shares that knowledge with anyone who wants to learn the trade!

Symposia

Ruizeveld participates in International Sculpture Symposia almost every year. You submit a small-scale 3D project based on a set or free theme. After a selection round, you may or may not be invited to produce your project in a larger format.

You're usually given a limited timeframe, a few weeks. Other participants come from Europe, Japan, Taiwan, Ukraine, and New Zealand, among others. It's an intensive but highly inspiring time. Each participant works on their own unique sculpture. Due to the lack of natural rock in the Netherlands, these symposia are held in countries where quarries are nearby. SO

The Utrecht Stone Sculptors

Ten Utrecht stone sculptors have united since 2017 under the name DUS. The goal is to promote stone sculpting and share experiences. To achieve these goals, DUS has established an annual "Symposium," which often engages in dialogue in stone with the city of Utrecht in general or a special location or building in the province of Utrecht. This has already resulted in several exhibitions and the publication of brochures. The DUS members are eager to show what they can contribute to their city!
